In 2017, Matt Furie drew the gap-toothed frog for Mad Magazine, turning Alfred E. Neuman into a sly, surreal Pepe, a rare honor for an outside artist. But only weeks later, disillusioned by what his creation had become, Furie killed Pepe off, a moment that made global headlines.
That summer, he reversed course with Save Pepe, a crowdfunded revival meant to restore the frog’s playful spirit and bright weirdness. The campaign met its goal in two days. Pepe was reborn, gap-toothed grin and all.
